Be fully packed before the movers arrive
Unless you're using a professional packing service, you want to be totally packed when the movers arrive. This helps movers do their job, and the overall move will go more smoothly. If movers are waiting to put items in the truck, then you are paying for more of their time. Have a packing checklist and go through it the day or week before your move and have everything ready for when the movers get there.
Label boxes for their destination
Moving day can get hectic. Label boxes with the intended room to make the move easier. A permanent marker, a sticky note, or small pieces of paper taped to each box with clear handwriting simply shows movers where to put the box.
Fragile items need labels, too! If only movers were mind-readers, everything would be much easier, but they aren't so letting your moving company know upfront what needs to be handled with care and make for a less stressful move.
Know where the movers can park
Having easy and stress-free access to your old and new home or office is crucial on moving day. First, being able to get in and out of the place easily cuts down on move time. Second, if there is a meter, you don't want your movers stuck with a moving ticket or needing to move their trucks in the middle of the move.
Distribute heavy items
Refrain from putting all of your heavy books in one box. Movers are usually strong and efficient, but they aren't superhuman. Distribute books among several boxes to make moving each item more portable.
Empty desks and dresser drawers
Most furniture with drawers is already heavy. Lessen the weight by removing all items from drawers before the movers arriving. Sliding drawers or doors can open, leaving your possessions susceptible to ending up in places they don't belong. If you absolutely cannot remove items from dresser drawers, then request they be plastic-wrapped before going on the truck.
Keep prescriptions and other valuables with you
Honestly, most movers don't want to be in charge of your jewelry, money, or any medications. If something is misplaced or goes missing during move day, there tends to be unexpected finger-pointing until things are found. Carry these items with you and let the moving crew take care of the rest.
Stay with the movers on move day
It is crucial to let movers do their job, but don't disappear once they get there. Stay clear of items heading towards the truck and remain accessible in case your mover needs you. If you do need to run an errand, let them know how they can contact you should an issue arise.
Tipping is standard but flexible
Tipping movers based on the finished job is always appreciated. The standard tipping practice is 10%-15% of the overall move total, but feel free to give more if they did an exceptionally great job navigating that awkward staircase or moving your items quickly. If you're unhappy with your move, talk to the head mover or supervisor and see if there is a way to resolve the issue before taking a grievance out on the movers' tip.
