Making Moving Day Fun for Kids

Getting them involved is a great first step, but it's not enough if it feels too boring for the kids.

Moving is a stressful process for the whole family. Unfortunately, adults often get so caught up with packing boxes they forget about the emotional impact a move can have on the kids.

Here are some ways to make the moving day fun instead of sad and stressful for children.

Involve them in the process

Even if their contribution is small, the moving day will be more enjoyable for kids if they feel like they're contributing. Fill them in on the plans and encourage them to take part. Let them sort and pack their items so they feel more in control. Give them markers, stickers, and colorful tape to decorate their boxes. These items will make packing feel more creative and stimulating to them.

Give them special, age-appropriate tasks to make them feel like they're a big part of the moving action. For example, they can pick a special box for their favorite toys. It's also a good idea to have a personal moving day kit for them, with snacks, games, and activities to keep them busy.

Fun packing

Getting them involved is a great first step, but it's not enough if it feels too boring for the kids. A good way around this is to turn packing into a game. For example, it could be a race to see who can pack their toys the fastest (if there are multiple kids) or which child packs one box the most neatly.

Another fun activity is encouraging the kids to tell stories about their favorite items as they pack them. Doing so will make the packing feel more personal and nostalgic.

Saying goodbye

Saying goodbye to the old house may be one of the hardest aspects of moving for the kids. On the moving day, you might organize a small goodbye party with close friends and family to say farewell to the old house.

Also, make a memory book or box of the old house and the neighborhood so the kids have something tangible to reminisce about.

First day in the new home

Turn the first day at the new house into an exploration adventure. Let the kids explore new spaces, whether nooks and crannies of the house itself or the yard and neighborhood. When the kids move into their new room, let them decide how to decorate it and make it feel their own. They may want it to look similar to their old one or try something new and more daring.

Keep it positive

Above all else, having the right attitude makes the move fun for kids. Stay upbeat, and the kids will pick up on the positive energy. For more insights, talk to your moving company and ask them for tips on moving with kids.
