Five Simple Tips to Reduce Moving Stress

Woohoo! The big day is finally set, and you're now gearing up for moving day. You string together a to-do list, and now you're wondering about fragile items, where to put the boxes before the move, and suddenly you are flooded with lots of stress and anxiety that things are not going to go as planned. First things first, take a deep breath and don't fret. We've compiled five simple steps to help moving to go smoothly.

Start A Few Weeks In Advance

In our experience, we find starting to pack a few weeks out a little at a time makes it much easier on moving day. Try thirty minutes or an hour per day and pack the stuff you don't use daily first, such as keepsakes, garage storage items, and anything that you know you won't touch but still needs to make it through the move.

Play Keep, Toss, Sell or Donate with your items

Decluttering and getting rid of stuff before moving day quite literally allows you to worry about fewer physical objects on the big day. Fewer things to worry about means it's easier when you can put energy into selling that mirror that's been taking up space in your storage for months. Furthermore, take measurements of your new home and get rid of items that just won't fit or you expect not to use. A less cluttered space will help with a less cluttered mind when the movers arrive.

Take Pictures & Label Furniture & Accessories

Believe us, taking photos and labeling everything will help when you're wondering what on earth that bag of screws went to and have items to reassemble.

Be In Charge Of Your Breakables

First, invest in suitable boxes. Anything that's had prior use or was previously-stored somewhere for a long time can have less durability than new moving boxes. Moving boxes are relatively inexpensive, and especially for your most fragile and cherished items, it's worth splurging on a box. Always secure the bottom of boxes that will be housing breakables with strong tape.

Bubble wrap, newspaper, towels, and sheets are essentials for a successful move. Instead of purchasing padding for your breakables, you likely have tons of soft items lying around your house that need to complete the move with you, so why not repurpose as pillows for your breakables? Remember to individually wrap your things, and add more cushioning around the especially fragile items, like wine stems, mugs, and lightbulbs.

Delegate Someone As Moving Director

On moving day, things start to get a bit hectic, so find someone in your crew who can communicate to your movers where things go and what needs to be done in what order they should be completed.  Delegating helps you save time in the actual moving process, and also requires less leg work for you.

A fun trick is to have color-coded sticky notes taped to each box. Each color can signify a room or area in the house, so there is little no confusion as to where the items should go.

Hopefully, these super simple moving tips are helpful and make your move less stressful and more fun. We believe in you! Happy Moving Day!
